| Joan was born on the land west of Arviat in May, 1943. At age 13 she attended school for several years and then in 1960 married David Owingayak. The couple raised 3 of their own children and adopted one other.
David passed away in 1991 and Joan now spends her time looking after her grandchildren. She is a quiet, friendly, woman who speaks little English.
